El Pollo Loco
A year or so ago, when I was working as a private investigator, one assignment took me down to LA where my boss at the time introduced me to a small fast food chain called El Pollo Loco - The Crazy Chicken. Essentially this is grilled chicken served with tortillas and your choice of a couple sides. At the time I remember thinking that it was fairly good but nothing special. Then, on about the 3rd day of my 4 day assignment the cravings started to kick in. I think I went back to the Crazy Chicken for both lunch and dinner that day, followed by lunch again the next day right before flying out. Since then, every time I find myself in southern California I’ve made it a point to go there at least once. Fortunately, Ashley understands the greatness that is El Pollo Loco, and always backs me up when I suggest that we go there to eat.
Anyway, the fact that I’ve only ever seen these places in SoCal has been quite distressing. The other day, however, I was in San Diego, looking at their webpage, trying to find one that was open 24 hours... (sometimes the craving hits at 2:00am....) I didn’t have any luck with that particular objective, but I did stumble across a list of restaurants in northern California! The nearest one being only 45 miles away! Now, I grant you a 2 hour drive with a $3 bridge toll might seem a little excessive for fast food... but that didn’t stop us.
At approximately 7:30pm last night, Kristin, Michelle, Steve, Nick, and I departed for Richmond, CA. Home of the nearest El Pollo Loco restaurant. The drive took a little longer then I had originally anticipated with some construction happening on the Richmond bridge, and a small navigational error which ended up getting us there, but from the opposite direction. I don’t know what it was... maybe the fact that we had arrived an hour before they closed.. But the chicken just didn’t seem as good as in San Diego. Still, it was El Pollo Loco, and I was happy. I got some shit from the rest of the people in the car, but I remain convinced that everyone had a good time. It might not have been an amazingly exciting tripwith a huge pay off at the end, but it was an adventure none the less. One which I would choose over sitting at home in front of the TV any day.
